KareliaWindy and snowy Russian February02/24 2010
02/24/10 There was a great holiday yesterday for all the Russian men! The 23th of February is The Defender of the Motherland Day.
![]() On this day men receive a lot of gifts from their nearest and dearest, plenty of concerts are organized to please them, their families cook tasty dinners to spent this holiday together and congratulate the defenders of their homes. So men are treated like kings! And the whole country gets long weekends. This year there were 4 days off to rest and enjoy the time!
![]() The students of the Russian language school Enjoy Russian had the opportunity to enjoy their time as well and to see the way the national holiday is celebrated in Russia and may be even to congratulate someone! Besides Marisa and Anni visited numerous clubs and parties last week, watched movies in cinemas. We know they like spending time out! The girls haven’t told us yet what their impressions after the weekends are but we are full of anticipation!!
02/15/10
Marisa, Anni and Ashley continue learning the Russian language at Enjoy Russian language school. We are always glad to share something interesting and unique about Russia, Karelia and Petrozavodsk with them. That's why last week the girls visited the Museum of Regional and now know plenty of facts about the history of Karelia and the life of people on the territory of the current Karelia. They say the excursion was great!
At the weekends we had the National Food Party again! The students were so impressed by the idea that they couldn’t help organizing it. So we have learnt a couple of new national recipes! By the way, this party was connected with the Russian national holiday called Maslenitsa. ![]() Maslenitsa lasts a week and takes origins from the pagan Slavic holiday of saying goodbye to winter and welcoming spring. Ancient Slavs used to cook pancakes and made a figure like a scarecrow symbolizing winter and then burned it signing and dancing around it.
![]() That week plenty of entertainments used to be arranged, for instance, fisticuffs, side shows, fairs… People tried to take advantage of the holiday as the next week brought the fast that last 40 days till Easter.
![]() Nowadays the idea of the holiday is pretty the same and people don’t participate in fisticuffs, of course, but together with their families and friends make most of the time and go out at the streets of towns and entertain themselves, eat pancakes with sour-cream, caviar, honey, jam, etc…So did our students and took part in public festive gatherings which took place at Kirov Square the main square of the city. And after such a tasty party the guys enjoyed their time at the open-air winter entertaining complex “Gorka”. They like this place very much and have already visited it several times to skate, ski and snowboard. 02/12/10
![]() First we watched a magnificent dance by one of the local dance clubs.
![]() Then Panaiotis - our English teacher from Great Britain - suggested playing a game that was a real fun!
![]() The game called "YES or NO". Panaiotis told some unusual facts about the way English people get married. The audience was supposed to decide whether they were truth - and stand up - or false - and stayed on their places. For instance, would you stand up if you'd been told that the greatest sum of money spent on a wedding singer was £2 million? Or that the oldest bride was 102 years old? Challenging, isn't it?
![]() After such a physically active game the visitors had a rest and tried to make an original St.Valentine card under control of a professional designer. Everyone succeeded and got a hand-made present for their beloved. And one more surprise - a photoset by a professional photographer!
![]() We believe everyone spent great time with us! 02/08/10
![]() But still there are 3 more students here; Ashley, David and Marisa made friends very fast and spend a lot of time together.
Last week they went to the party called Russian Thursday in one of Petrozavodsk night clubs. At the weekend they were skiing, skating and snowboarding in an open air entertaining complex. We believe that was great!
Ashley visited a day care and spent her time with small children who only started learning English. It seems to be rather challenging for her. ![]() And today we are waiting for one more student from Finland - Anni! Anni is gouing to take 2 week Russian language course at Enjoy Russian and the next 3 weeks she will be a volunteer at the charitable foundation working with children. Last week was not very easy for Panaiotis, our teacher form Great Britain, as he started teaching English. He is very popular here and plenty of people wish to study in his groups.
This week we have a very exciting event this Thursday – Great Britain, Great Love – devoted to St. Valentine’s Day. Panaiotis and Ashley will be the main persons on it! 02/01/10
![]() He will stay with us till the end of April. Just imagine what a pleasure it is for all of us to communicate with him! He’s very nice and is committed to his work. We have already had the opportunity to know each other better; last week we watched a film together and even went to a night club!
![]() Soon we are planning to organize a party called Great Britain, Great Love and invite all comers. We will be dancing, talking English and Russian, making St.Valentine cards and even taking part in a romantic photo session.
Today two more students have joined us, David from Germany and Marisa from Switzerland. After their Russian classes the guys will have the excursion around Ptz and tomorrow our students-volunteers will prepare an interesting presentation about Russia and Karelia. And we are waiting for Anni from Finland to visit our Russian language school and improve her Russian. We anticipate the moment we’ll be able to know each other and make new friends.
