Russia was celebrating another wonderful holiday yesterday. That was the International Women’s Day. This time it was women’s turn to get presents, bunches of spring flowers, congratulations, listen to warm pleasant words… Every year plenty of women wait for this holiday not only to find out that they are beautiful and loved. The 8th of March is the very beginning of spring and soon warm and sunny days will start. Besides this was an extra day-off to celebrate the holiday with families and friends.

My Impressions of Working and Studying in RussiaBelow you can read a story written by one of the volunteers from Europe who came to Karelia few weeks ago. She combines her work as a volunteer with Russian language course at our School “Enjoy Russian”. Çäðàâñòâóéòå! Ìåíÿ çîâóò Àíÿ, ìíå 19 ëåò, ÿ ñòóäåíòêà èç Ãåðìàíèè è ñåé÷àñ ÿ âîëîíòåð â Ðîññèè. (Hello! My name is Anja. I’m 19 years old and I’m a student from Germany. And now I’m working as a volunteer in Russia.) This was about all the Russian I could speak when I left my home town Berlin to fly to Russia for a six-months-stay in the frame of the European Voluntary Service (EVS) program. It has been my dream to experience living in Russia ever since a Russian friend of mine introduced my to my first lesson in Russian: Kalinka! I immediately caught fire- concerning the culture, the joy of celebrating and the language, wherefore I started studying Russian after finishing school last year.
Today I have been in Petrozavodsk for three weeks and I will spend all summer here in order to get to know the Russian culture and learn Russian at Russian language School “Enjoy Russian” and work in the local youth education centre “Centre Initiative”.
The work there involves several projects with young people, theatre and music. Those three things have always been an important and valuable part of my life, as my main interests were and are my friends and family, creative expression such as acting, writing and photography, and enjoying music at concerts, in clubs or simply at home. Therefore I am very happy to work in those projects and to get to know the active, lively youth work of Petrozavodsk.
Russia has welcomed me warmly- even though not through its weather- and I have already learned a lot about life here and also about myself. I am confident that the upcoming five months will be just as interesting- and hopefully when I go back to Germany in September to pick up my law studies, I might even be able to pronounce the Russian word “äîñòîïðèìå÷àòåëüíîñòè” without getting my tongue in a twist…
