The way Russian youth studies
Russia is a unique country, not like the most countries in Europe. People even study differently! Though the main points are the same, it’s important to know some specific information when you come to Russia.
For the last 20 years the educational system has been being changed drastically and is more oriented to children’s experience and wishes. They start their learning at the age of 7 when they come to school.
![]() Before that they usually attend some day care, kindergartens. Pre-school education is not obligatory; plenty of children are prepared for school right at home by their parents or mostly by grandparents. So, first 3 or 4 years at school are elementary school after which children have to decide the profile, direction of their future studies. Most children study at school 11 years but they may leave it after their 9th year and enter some colleges, professional schools and etc.
![]() Before finals at school there is a tradition to celebrate the last lesson; school leavers prepare the performance to present their classes at the stage, invite their teachers and parents, after that classmates get together to continue their holiday in cafés, discos and so on. Upon passing the finals the big prompt is organized for the future university students. That’s common for most of western countries.
![]() By the way, college in Russia is not the same as in Europe or the USA. It doesn’t give you a higher education, only some technical profession or whatever. You may get a degree in Russia only upon graduation from a university or institute. There are no limitations for entering a higher school, so even if you have left school after the 9th form you may enter a university but only after having received some college education. To do that applicants have to submit a EGE exam test (United State Examination), thanks to it they do not have to pass entry tests as it used to be just 7 years ago!!! So teenagers enter universities at the age of 17-18, and graduate from them at the age of 22-23.
![]() Plenty of applicants prefer studying in Moscow or St. Petersburg and live in dormitories or leave abroad to enter European colleges and universities. A lot of students start working during their studies to pay for them or to start living separately. Studying at a Russian university contains a set of subjects that can’t be changed and is confirmed by the administration though there are some rare optional courses. Upon graduation they get a specialist’s degree (that’s something in between bachelor’s and master’s degrees). There is always the option to continue education at the post-graduate level.
![]() Nowadays after having entered a Bologna Process, we are changing the system to meet the Western standards in education, therefore for the last several years undergraduates have had the opportunity to get a bachelor’s degree or to continue studying to be masters. That is done to create the unified system and make graduates’ attempts to work and live abroad easier. By the way, after the finals at a university graduates organize a great party (kind of a prompt one) which they celebrate with their professors and instructors.
![]() Now you have a general impression about how young people study in Russia. You see there are not so many differences but that’s one more topic for you to discuss and find out more information about from your new Russian friends.
