“Dom Kykli” – a place, where Russian fairytales and myths become real
Here is a story of how our students immersed into Russian folklore and made their own traditional Karelian dolls
Noticeably, Russia is famous for its rich and unique culture. This, of course, refers to its mythology and folklore as well. In Petrozavodsk there is a special place that became home to many fictional characters, including mermaid, Baba Yaga, Kikimora, Vodyanoy, and many others. This place is called “Dom Kykli”, the only private gallery in Petrozavodsk.
“Dom Kykli” – just a gallery or a real home for dolls?
To begin with, we need to clarify: what exactly is “Dom Kykli”? The answer is not as simple as it may seem. Traditionally, the word “Dom” means “home”. Thus, this place should be more than just a private gallery; it should be a home for a large variety of dolls, and our students confirm: it definitely is.
At first, all the inhabitants were made by Tatiana Kalinina – the founder of the gallery. She created them with great love and care, that inspired many other artists. Now all of them contribute to this happy family of dolls. These wonderful people managed to create and nurture the atmosphere of coziness and cordiality, that everyone would appreciate.
How to enhance your cultural experience in Petrozavodsk? Become a guest of the traditional Karelian spirits
The gallery provides a unique opportunity to learn more about Russian and Karelian culture. First, there you can meet some of the characters from Pushkin’s poem “Ruslan and Ludmila”, including educated cat, Baba Yaga, and Tsar Koschei. Moreover, “Dom Kykli” has a special exhibition, dedicated to the traditional Karelian spirits. Our students did not miss the chance to see such astonishing mythological creatures as mermaid, Vodyanoy (water spirit), Domovoy (house spirit), Kikimora (devious swamp spirit), and they were not disappointed!
Besides, the skillful specialists of the gallery conducted a special workshop, during which each of our students made her own couple of the traditional Karelian dolls. These bright and colorful tiny figures will now protect them from evil spirits, and bring happiness into their lives.
Summing up, if during your stay in Russia you are looking for a really remarkable experience, you should definitely visit one of the most amazing, creative, and artistic places in Petrozavodsk – “Dom kykli”.
