Visiting the Fine Arts Museum in Petrozavodsk with a guide is always a fine idea
The Fine Arts Museum of the Republic of Karelia has great collections of art: icon painting, Russian art of different periods (from XV till XX centuries) and, of course, art of Karelian Republic.
Despite the fact that The Fine Arts Museum in Petrozavodsk is not so famous as other museums un Russia it has a long and impressive history counted from XIV century. The museum, as we know it now, was opened only in 1960, but all its precious exhibits have been collecting for many centuries.
Particular pride of the museum is a collection of icons, probably all 2500 exhibits were collected on the territory of Karelia.

Another treasure is a collection of Russian art of XVII-XX centuries. You don’t have to be a good specialist in art to find some familiar names in this exhibition hall. Do you know Aivazovsky? 5 works of famous seascape painter are real gems of the museum. Works of Shishkin, Levitan, Polenov are also represented here.

But an excursion is not completed without introduction to Karelian artists, epic poem Kalevala and decorative and applied art.
Collection of decorative and applied art consists of traditional needlepoint and woodcarving of Karelian wizards, national costumes and ceramic dishes. You will discover the lifestyle of peoples and ethnocultural specialties of its region. The favorite part of excursion among our students is to try on traditional costume and feel like Karelian!
