Celebrate Russian Maslenitsa holiday together with a host family
Host families will show you how to have fun like locals
Living in a host family is not only about practicing Russian, but also you have a unique possibility to get closer to locals, to see many things from the inner side. It is not a secret that people in Russian adore different occasions that give a reason to celebrate it and have fun.
Malsenitsa is a beloved holiday that has pagan routes and celebrated as usual in March. What people usually do? Eat pancakes and wait for the spring to come. But if you are not lazy one you have a great chance to spend an unforgettable weekend during the pancake week.
Our student Sirpa and her host Tatyana are just those ladies who have spent marvelous two days in the small Karelian village Tuloksa. Early in the morning they jumped into the car and took a road trip. The way was long and snowy, but what a pleasure of knowing that the баня (banya) was already heated and the dinner was served. No doubt that Tatyana’s friends whom they visited appeared to be great hosts too.
Sunday morning began with a preparation: one frying pan, two frying pans, three frying pans…all forces were focused on making pancakes. Sirpa took a pancake-do lesson and even tried to bake several pancakes at one moment.
Well done! But there was still one important task – to make up a straw stuffed lady. Finally, a big stack of pancakes and straw doll were ready and it was high time to enjoy the holiday!
All the villagers got together to celebrate Malsenitsa. Colorful costumes, music, dancing, songs, games…no way to sit still and get bored! Everybody prepared something for the festive common table. And, and of course, as a culmination was the burning of the Maslenitsa doll made of straw.
“I will never forget this amazing weekend with my host family and all those people! ” Sirpa says.
