Daria from South Korea shares what she misses the most about Russia
Summer is a holiday time for school and university students in Russia
Many working people prefer to have vacations during one of the summer months (June, July, and August). In most regions across the country, the weather is comfortable and enjoyable to spend time in the countryside or outdoors, it is a great getaway from busy and noisy cities. Three summer activities in Russia, which I miss the most, are picking mushrooms, fishing and camping in the woods or by the seaside.
A short guide on how to pick mushrooms in Russia
Most Russian cities and towns are surrounded by forests, so it is easy to drive outside the town for picking mushrooms in the woods. Many Russians enjoy the process of searching and picking different kinds of mushrooms by themselves, it is a fantastic way to relax by spending some time in the forest, breathing fresh air, listening to birds singing. An added bonus is that you get mushrooms for delicious dinner or for pickles for winter.
- Before going for mushroom picking, it is better to study which kinds of mushrooms are edible and which are not, inedible mushrooms can cause poisoning or even death.
- Furthermore, it is important to take a knife for cutting mushrooms to leave its roots in the ground, in this case, next year the same mushrooms will grow at the same place so you can return to pick them again. If you are lucky enough, you can also find some wild berries or nuts.
- When the basket is full of mushrooms, it is time for a barbecue or a picnic.
Fishing by a lake, river or seaside
Different regions of Russia have different kinds of fish, but this activity is quite popular among many men across the country. There are even some regional competitions for amateur fishermen, who can catch the bigger number of fish within a limited time.
A special law has been introduced by the Russian government to control amateur fishing activity to prevent wild fish to be caught in big amounts, inspectors control this process because fish is a precious natural resource of our country, same as oil, coal, etc. Fishing is enjoyable for most Russian men, they can spend time out of noisy cities and get a healthy and delicious dinner for the whole family.
Fried fish and fish soup called “Uha” are the most popular meals made from fresh caught fish. On the second Sunday of July Fishman’s Day is celebrated across the whole country. It is a professional holiday for people who are connected with the fishing industry in Russia or for everyone, who likes fishing. On this day, people across the country celebrate this holiday by joining festivals with performances, games and competitions. The whole family can participate and have a good time.
Camping is another popular summer activity in Russia
Depending on the region, we go camping in the woods, mountains or seaside. Preparation for camping is very important, proper clothes and footwear must be put on, sufficient food, drink and equipment must be brought along. In the Primorskiy region in the Far-East of Russia, a lot of people prefer camping by the seaside. Swimming and sunbathing are the most enjoyable activities for women, diving, snorkeling and fishing – for men. It is a lot of fun to catch some fish or other seafood and get it cooked on the fire and eat raw. Breathing in the fresh ocean air and swimming activities are considered the best medicine for the immune system.
Instead of going abroad many Russians prefer to spend summer vacation in our own country. Come to Karelia to explore the beauty of the country and enjoy nature! You may choose a course HERE
