Meet Talvi Ukko – the Karelian wizard of winter
Naturally, the people of the North tend to have their own rich and unique mythology. Ethnics of the Karelian region are not an exception. Of course, everyone knows about the Russian Ded Moroz, yet here in Karelia, we have our own master of cold – Talvi Ukko.
According to the legend, he came to the Earth from space with a shooting star on a frosty winter night. Two dogs found the baby in the woods and brought him to the village. The family that gave him shelter had soon realized that he was vastly different from other people: he preferred cold weather, did not like hunting, and spent most of the time in a forest with two dogs, that rescued him. Time passed, and neighbors started to ask Talvini (that was his original name) to deliver presents to their friends and relatives on the New Year’s Eve, because he was not afraid of the cold weather and enjoyed bringing people joy. Nowadays Talvi Ukko still delivers presents all over Karelia, but, as the population grows, he decided to get some helpers. Thus, Lumikin – Snow Maiden, daughter of the moon and winter storm cloud, – together with reindeer and sled dogs began to assist him in doing this honorable job. This team would be glad to welcome you as their guest and make you feel as if you were in a fairytale.
