Russian superstitions concern gifts
Perhaps you have heard that there are a lot of superstitions in Russia. Moreover, some of them concern gifts. Read the following pieces of advice in order not to find yourself in the awkward situation!
.Watches are considered to be a bad sign for the family. Usually people associate them with a soon death of a family member, quarrels or separation.
.You shouldn’t present knives (and other sharp items like needles and scissors) as well because there is a belief that they bring misfortunes in the house.
.It is also believed that giving a handkerchief is a very bad sign too. It will cause tears, which are commonly a consequence of various troubles. It is an outdated tradition, though: people rarely present handkerchiefs given that they can but paper ones anytime.
.Mirrors are mystical things and they can bring worries to your house because in old times they were used for fortune telling, which is quite a dark activity. Actually, there are a lot of superstitions connected to mirrors in Russia — if you break one, seven years of misfortunes will follow you.
.Crockery can be presented but be attentive: it must not be with cracks, otherwise it will “break” the life of another person. If you decided to give it as a present, some people say that it will be better if you put a coin inside of a cup or a plate: it symbolizes that empty crockery will not bring lack of money to the family.
.Empty wallets have the same idea as crockery: you should put something inside, money is welcome.
.If you decided to present an animal, you must ask for a symbolic ransom. It can be only one coin but it is believed that this way a cat or a dog will feel comfortable in a new house.
.Hairbrush is also a bad present. Maybe the roots of this superstition are hidden back in history, when hair was used in fortune telling and cursing people.
.You should not present ties because of the belief that this item kind of “ties” the person to you. There were a lot of love spells where ties were used, so you should better be careful with this gift. On the other hand, it is allowed to give it to your nearest and dearest.
.Necklaces may be torn and it can lead to the fact that you stop keeping in touch with each other. Think twice before presenting a necklace.
.Some people are convinced that giving candles is also a bad sign because it associates with funerals. If you know that your friend is superstitious, presenting candles is not a great idea.
.Odd number of flowers is usually brought to the funerals so if you are visiting someone, buy seven, five, three or even one flower — that will do!
.It is an awful idea to present artificial flowers because they trigger associations about cemetery. You should better buy live flowers or plants in pots.
