Hot&cold: geographical position of Petrozavodsk
The city is located in northwestern Russia in the republic called Karelia. The western border of Karelia coincides with the border between the Russian Federation and Finland. It is washed by the White Sea from the North and Petrozavodsk is its capital city. The main feature of the Karelian climate is high humidity. That’s why it can be very cold in winter and extremely hot in summer.
The average air temperature:
- in June in Karelia during the day is +20 degrees, at night +11.
- In July, +22 and +14 degrees, respectively.
- In August – again +20 and +13
As you can see it’s pretty warm, but Karelian people aways grab with them jackets, umbrellas, and sunglasses.
If you happen to come to Karelia in summer you may take with you a sweater, jeans, a hat, an umbrella, but don’t forget dresses, shorts, swimsuits, sunglasses, sunscreen as well.
Russian North in winter
Winters in Petrozavodsk are very snowy. The average temperature in December and January is -10 or – 12 degrees, however, sometimes it can be up to -25 degrees. February is considered to be the coldest month in Karelia, snowy and windy as well. So don’t forget waterproof boots and jacket to feel comfortable outside and be ready to wrap yourself into several layers.
