Why do our students choose Petrozavodsk?
Petrozavodsk is the capital of the Republic of Karelia, the administrative, industrial, tourist, scientific and cultural center of the North-West Federal District of Russia. Petrozavodsk is not a big city with a population of 277 thousand.
Act like locals!
Felix: The city is not big, thus why it is not a problem to walk from one point to another. And I like to walk, at home (in Edinburg) I probably do not use public transport, and that’s cool.
People are very welcoming here. The volunteers I met here in Petrozavodsk are great, I think I have made lifelong friends with lots of them!
Petrozavodsk significantly distinguish from big touristic cities: there is no information in English. No menu in English, no signs, no names, no translation. You find yourself in a natural environment and act like locals. I learned Russia very quick, that really works!
By the way, Petrozavodsk has a great location! The distance from Moscow – 1091 km, from St. Petersburg – 412 km, from the nearest border crossing point with Finland – 311 km. And Felix went to St. Petersburg with his new friends to play at the concert.
People in Petrozavodsk have time for communication
Jean-Michel: I like Petrozavodsk because of the people. I were in Moscow several times and felt very lonely and sad there. People have to work a lot, they are in a hurry all the time, have no time just for coffee and conversation. I even made some friends via the internet but we fell to meet in real life, as I said – people in big cities have no time for communication. And people in Petrozavodsk are dramatically different – they are extroverts. Once I met with a volunteer from Scholl and we walked for 4 hours. Can you imagine? We just walked in the park, had coffee and chatted. And definitely my host is my favorite one, so open minded and willing to help!
Only Russian and no distracions
Myriam: Petrozavodsk is a save and comfortable city. It’s very suitable for concentrate on learning Russian. And such a great thing that you don’t have to spend time in a traffic jam. You feel free to communicate with people, they really have time to listen to your not so fluent and fast Russian. People are attentive and friendly.
