Why in winter – ask Alina
Who knows more about learning Russian than an education coordinator of Russian language courses? Today we are going to ask Alina Aleshina, a person, who is responsible for the study process in “Enjoy Russian” Language School, why one should come to Petrozavodsk to learn Russian and why in winter.
- What’s special about “Enjoy Russian” Language School in comparison with others?
There are lots of things! Firstly, the school stuff really cares about the quality of education. We always work on ways of improvement: hold furthering pedagogical education seminars for the teachers of Russian, integrate new methods and techniques in the study process, ask students to give their feedbacks, so we could know what to work on and so on. Secondly, the location of the school is the best for Russian language learners!
- Really? But usually people go to Moscow or Saint Petersburg to learn Russian.
Yes, but there are a few serious reasons, why you should go to a smaller city… Moscow is a great place to visit, but it’s huge (some students told me that it was too difficult to navigate and they just prefered to stay at home than spend hours in public transport); people are busy, so it’s harder to find somebody to talk in Russian; it’s expensive. Saint Petersburg is an amazing city that I love with all my heart. But some students that went there said that they did not have many opportunitites to speak Russian, because many people spoke English. Another thing is that schools in Saint Petersburg have so many foreigners coming each year, so they do not care for each student as much as we do here in Petrozavodsk.
- Good points. Are there any other reasons to come to Petrozavodsk “Enjoy Russian” Language School?
Yes! As I said, if you want to speak Russian a lot you should go to a smaller city like this one. Also the rhythm of life is not that fast in Petrozavodsk, so people are more likely to stop and help you, and talk to you in Russian in the street or in a shop than in big cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
- But there are many small cities to go to in Russia to learn Russian… Why exactly Russian learners should choose Petrozavodsk?
Yes, there are lots of small cities, which probable also run Russian courses – Russia is huge, you know. But Petrozavodsk is really easy to get to! You can come from: Finland (you can even take a car or a bus from Helsinki), Saint Petersburg (5 hours by comfortable train), Moscow (8-12 hours by train or really fast by plain).
- What about our cold weather?
Well, it has its good things. Where else can you expirience the real Russian winter: enjoy the snowy weather, go to Ice and Snow Scultures Festivals, do winter sports? In winter we have the most important Russian holidays that can show the real Russian spirit to you: New Year, Christmas, Old New Year, Epithany holiday, when people plunge into freezing cold water of lakes and rivers – that’s something everyone should see:)
- So what should a person take with him / her if he / she wants to come to Petrozavodsk in winter?
Just lots of warm clothes and some good mood and desire to explore Russia and learn the Russian language:)
- Thank you for your answers!
