How to explain the reason in Russian with lots of examples

Of course, you can use the basic ПОТОМУ ЧТО (BECAUSE), but today we'll shed light on two (or even four) more variants that you can also use: благодаря or из-за.


Let's enrich your lexicon with new Russian vocabulary.

You probably already know the essential word "потому что" which helps you to explain the reason why something is happening. It rather has a neutral meaning, for example:

Мне нужно пойти в библиотеку, потому что я хочу взять новую книгу.

Using the word "благодаря" you can underline a positive meaning of the result. To understand its positive connotation let's have a look at the word "благодарный" which means "grateful":
Я получил визу благодаря помощи школы "Enjoy Russian"

Or you can use "благодаря тому, что" (don't forget about the comma):
Я получил визу благодаря тому, что Мария из школы "Enjoy Russian" помогла мне оформить документы

Another preposition "из-за" is more about negative or even neutral sense.
Я не могу поехать в Россию из-за карантина

Or "из-за того, что":
Я не могу поехать в Россию из-за того, что границы закрыты

Let's compare:
Я знаю русский, потому что у меня хороший учитель.
Я знаю русский благодаря моему учителю.
Я знаю русский благодаря тому, что у меня хороший учитель.

Or:
Я не мог заснуть, потому что было шумно.
Я не мог заснуть из-за шума.
Я не мог заснуть из-за того, что было шумно.
